Why are we holding a Nominating Convention?

Wasco County Democrats are choosing a candidate for Wasco County Commissioner Position 1 because of unusual results in the May 2010 primary election.

On the Democratic side, nobody filed to be a candidate for this position. On the Republican side, there were two candidates: incumbent Dan Ericksen and challenger Scott Hege.

Both candidates ran a campaign to get write-in vote on the blank Democratic ballot. Hege won the Republican nomination, but Ericksen got the most Democratic write-ins.

Under election law, if the winning candidate also gets the most write-ins on the opposing ticket, that blocks any other candidate from running for the position in the general election. But Hege did not get the write-ins, so the Democratic position remains open, and the party has the option of appointing a candidate to run in the November election.

At our regular meeting on July 13, the Wasco County Democratic Central Committee adopted rules for conducting the Nominating Convention. Copies of these rules can be requested from Mark Ward.
